From Cayley Van Hemmen at Turner Construction. Blackbird Interactive, is an independent, Vancouver-based game developer located in the False Creek Flats. In 2017, they were rapidly expanding their team and seeking to expand their HQ. The head office fit-out (named Studio 3) is located on a single floor in a newly constructed building, adjacent to the Emily Carr University Campus at 565 Great Northern Way.
Construction
Turner Construction Company provided pre-construction and construction management services for the ~28,700 sq. ft. studio. The scope included construction of offices, studios for sound engineering, exposed ceilings with acoustic spray, an open atrium area with a kitchen, staff benching, and a stage. Studio 3 incorporates an “industrial scarcity” concept, with open spaces and a 360 “right to light” atmosphere. The layout accommodates collaborative zones within the floor area for impromptu meetings or gatherings, and workstations are arranged in an unstructured configuration. The entrance to “Studio 3” functions as a welcoming common space. “Studio 1” has a Sea-Can storage container installed at the entrance which is incorporated in a unique aspect in the design of “Studio 3”.
